Sulawesi is spellbinding to say the least. A land full of intriguing cultures and customs that is on display for all to see. Toraja in the south is home to elaborate funeral ceremonies and hemmed in by surrounding mountains, adding to the tangible atmosphere.
Scenery of volcanoes and rice fields is simply magnificent with elaborate graves clinging to cliff tops or even dug into the base of trees. A visit to Sulawesi is simply out of this world.
Visit several villages of the Bugis people whose stilted houses line breath-taking mountain passes as you make your way to Rantepao, the small capital of Toraja. Spend 2 days exploring the Toraja villages and learning about their unique culture. Discover the unique surroundings and rituals held at Lemo and Suaya villages before continuing to Sangala.
Discover the canyons, waterfalls and riverside villages of the region by rafting along the level 2-3 waters. This is a great way to see the wildlife in this region along the Mai’ting River. Keep a look out for iguanas and colourful tropical birds. You also take to the water when boarding a longboat to see the floating houses of the Bugis people. Enjoy some local tasty treats and witness traditions such as fishing and fish drying while learning about life on the lake. End your tour by relaxing on the nearby island of Liukan, surrounded by a pristine coral environment full of marine life making it perfect for snorkeling.
DAY 1 - BALI - MAKASSAR - RANTEPAO
Travel through several villages of the local Bugis people with your guide, learning about the stilted houses they live in. After lunch in Pare-Pare, continue to Rantepao, the capital of Toraja.
Check in to your hotel in Rantepao. Dinner this evening is at the hotel.

DAY 2 - RANTEPAO - TORAJA
After breakfast it is time to head south and visit two traditional villages. First is Lemo, a village surrounded by cliffs with numerous graves and realistic hanging effigies. You then continue on to Sangala where graves are found dug into the base of tree trunks.
In the afternoon you visit Londa village for its suspended wooden coffins and Kete-Kesu where a well preserved traditional Toraja house can be seen. Return to the hotel late this afternoon. Dinner at the hotel

DAY 3 - RANTEPAO TREKKING - LIMBONG
Today you trek through the captivating southern region of Tana Toraja. Commencing in Salu, you will learn about the various methods of rice and coffee production in the area as well as seasonal fruits and vegetables that can be grown. Enjoy your evening dining in a traditional style Toraja house in the village of Limbong.

DAY 4 - LIMBONG - RAFTING MAI-TING RIVER - RANTEPAO
After breakfast walk to the rafting launch on the Mai’ting River. An easy raft ride lets you explore canyons, waterfalls and riverside villages from water level. You may also see animals such as iguanas and tropical birds.

DAY 5 - RANTEPAO - SENGKANG (TEMPE LAKE)
Head to the Toraja region of Sulawesi and travel to the village of Sengkang. Explore the verdant tropical forests of Sulawesi and the Palopo villages and take lunch at a local restaurant. You will meet the local Bugis people and learn about their unique traditional floating style houses before travelling on a longboat to enjoy some local snacks and try your hand at local customs such as fishing.

DAY 6 - SENGKANG TO BIRA BEACH
Today you head to the south eastern tip of Sulawesi, an area famous for its white sandy beaches. Visit a rural village of the Bugis people and learn about the processes of growing sugar, rice and cacao. Spend the afternoon enjoying life on the beach with the chance to snorkel in the sea.
Dinner will be in a local restaurant.

DAY 7 - LIUKAN ISLAND - TANA BERU - BIRA
We will take a fisherman’s boat today and travel to the nearby island of Liukan where you can snorkel in a pristine coral environment. You will also visit the fishing village community of Konjo who are renowned for their weaving and design known as 'Ikat'. Returning to the hotel for dinner and an evening at leisure.

DAY 8 - BIRA - MAKASSAR
After breakfast, we will depart to Makassar, around a 4 hour drive, to take the flight to the next destination.
You can connect to flights to Denpasar or Jakarta, or alternatively stay an additional night in Maksasar and spend 4D3N on Wakatobi Island. (B)
