OVERVIEW

Beijing has been the political and cultural heart of China for centuries and has the monuments, parks and palaces to prove it.

Amongst its most famous historical sights are Tiananmen Gate (Gate of Heavenly Peace) and Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City (the Imperial Palace) which was built between 1406 and 1420 by the Ming emperor Yong Le. What visit to Beijing would be complete without a walk on the Great Wall.

With jagged peaks entwined in cloud, Huang Shan is China’s foremost sacred mountain. Take the cable car up through scenes of ethereal beauty and witness the sunrise and explore the many peaks as the mists unfurl in the valleys below

Nearby there are fascinating traditional villages, the likes of which are fast-disappearing from modern China. Nanping and Hongcun in particular are two of the most interesting and picturesque villages in the country, with ancient houses reflected in still ponds.

Shanghai, with a population of more than 23 million, is the largest and most developed city in China. It was the largest and most prosperous city in the Far East already during the 1930's, and has remained the most developed city in mainland China.
