OVERVIEW

A comprehensive tour of Colombia taking in the historical centre of the capital Bogota. Moving north you can experience the perfect colonial town of Villa de Leyva which seems a million miles away from the capital. A visit to the Salt Cathedral is a highlight. A quick flight will take you to the impressive fortified city of Cartagena with it pre Hispanic culture and the Palace of the Inquisition.

DAY 1 - BOGOTA

Arrival to El Dorado airport in Bogota meet and transfer to the hotel for overnight.

DAY 2 - BOGOTA - CITY TOUR

Half day visit to the historic center known as La Candelaria. The ancient quarters, of great architectural importance, are formed by grand houses of profound Spanish influence with iron windows, thick wooden doors, balconies and internal patios that hide beautiful gardens. The area unfolds around the Plaza Bolívar with a statue of Simón Bolívar, El Libertador. The cathedral is next to the square, on the site of Bogotá’s first church built in 1539 and holds an important collection of liturgical, textile and ornamental objects collected over four centuries. Next to it, the Capilla del Sagrario, the religious architectural jewel of the city. Nearby is the Capitolio, built between 1847 and 1926, of Ionic, Neoclassical and Renaissance influence. The central area is occupied by the Salón Elíptico, where the meetings of congress take place. Continue to the Palace of Justice and to the seat of the Alcaldía Mayor, Edificio Liévano, which are always on the Plaza Bolívar. visit the Museo Botero which houses works by the artist Fernando Botero and others by Picasso, Renoir, Dalí, Matisse, Monet and Giacometti. Visit the Museo del Oro which features nearly 34.000 gold objects and 20.000 in stone, ceramic, textiles and precious stones of the Quimbaya, Calima, Tairona, Sinu, Muisca, Tolima, Tumaco and Magdalena cultures and is considered the most important collection of its kind worldwide. Free afternoon. (B)

DAY 3 - BOGOTA - ZIPAQUIRA - VILLA DE LEYVA

Departure to the north towards Zipaquirá, traveling across the central region of the savanna, home to Colombia’s famous flower cultures as you can see from the greenhouses along the road. Visit the Salt Cathedral. The visit begins in a tunnel that exhibits the fourteen stations of the Way of the Cross and leads to the dome where you can observe the great cross sculpted in low relief. You finally arrive to the three naves of the cathedral joined by openings that represent the birth and death of Christ. The central nave houses the main altar, a 16 meter cross, and the Creation of Man, a marble statue by the sculptor Carlos Enrique Rodríguez. Continue to Villa de Leyva and check-in to the hotel. Villa de Leyva, one of the area’s most beautiful colonial towns, was founded in 1572 by Andrés Díaz Venero de Leyva by order of the kingdom of Granada. In colonial times, it had a very important role as the viceroy and his entourage spent much time there. Today, the city is a colonial jewel with the 14.000 m2 Plaza Mayor surrounded by Spanish style houses, small alleys, cobblestone streets and the XVII century parochial church. (B)

DAY 4 - VILLA DE LEYVA - BOGOTA - CARTAGENA

Free morning. Return to Bogotá with a break in the Convento Ecce Huomo. Founded in 1620, it was an important point of evangelization in a region populated by infidel Indian communities. Arrival at Aeropuerto El Dorado in Bogotá and fly to Cartagena. Arrival, transfer and check-in to hotel. (B)

DAY 5 - CARTAGENA - CITY TOUR

Half day visit to the city’s colonial district, starting in Parque Bolívar, which is surrounded by large tress and four fountains with a statue of El Libertador in the center. Visit the Museo del Oro, which exhibits archaeological objects of the pre Hispanic culture and the Palace of the Inquisition. This palace housed the prison and torture chambers for the alleged opponents of the Catholic church. The visit continues to the Santo Domingo church and the cathedral to end in the Ramparts and the Museo de Las Fortificaciones. Free afternoon. (B)

DAYS 6 AND 7 - CARTAGENA

Free days for individual activities. An excursion to the Archipiélago del Rosario is recommended. (B)

DAY 8 - CARTAGENA - BOGOTA

Breakfast and transfer to the airport for flight to Bogota. (B)
