OVERVIEW

Belize and Guatemala embody the essence of Central America in miniature, from Mayan ruins to dense rainforest and from colonial jewels to colourful Indian markets.

With such a variation in landscape from rich forests and mangroves of the lowlands to the lofty volcanic peaks and lakes of the highland plateau, you will discover villages still influenced by Mayan tradition and language. The people of these Central American nations exude a warmth and hospitality that will make you want to return again and again.

DAY 1 - BELIZE CITY - BELIZE ZOO - GALES POINT - DANGRIGA - HOPKINS

Pick up your rental car this morning. From Belize City you head inland on Western Highway. Visit the charming Belize Zoo. Meet the national animal of Belize, the Tapir. Leaving the Zoo you have two options to reach today’s destination: either you take the Coastal Highway, a dirt road passing by fruit plantations - on the way you can visit the traditional Garifuna Village in Gales Point, right next to the Manatee Lagoon - and from there continue all the way to Dangriga or you head to the paved Hummingbird Highway which takes you all the way to Dangriga, a small Garifuna town right at the Caribbean Sea. Take a walk and enjoy the laid back life in this town. Drive on to Garifuna village Hopkins where you overnight. Overnight at Hopkins Inn, Hopkins

DAY 2 - HOPKINS - SOUTH WATER CAYE EXCURSION

Adventurous snorkel trip to "Bounty island“ South Water Caye. Take a boat tour (not included as this operates subject to weather conditions) to beautiful coral island South Water Caye located right on Belizes Barrief Reef. Enjoy its white sandy beaches and shady palm trees. Snorkel behind barrier reef and discover a multitud of tropical fishes and colourful, bizarre corals or simply relax in a hamack. Afternoon return to Hopkins. (B)

DAY 3 - HOPKINS - JAGUAR RESERVE - NIM LI PUNIT - SUN CREEK LODGE

Today you continue on Southern Highway towards Punta Gorda. At the Maya Center you will find the access road to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. Drive right into the rainforest; enjoy a hike on well marked jungle paths. Continue South and visit the small but nevertheless intriguing Mayan site of Nim Li Punit, before you reach the Sun Creek Lodge, where you will stay overnight in a cozy bungalow. (B)

DAY 4 - SUN CREEK LODGE - LUBAANTUN - SAN ANTONIO - BLUE CREEK CAVE - SUN CREEK

Visit the Maya site of Lubaantun, where the famous Crystal skull was found. Take a side cut to San Antonio, a typical Mayan Village. Continue to Blue Creek and take a hike through the dense and fascinating jungle where you eventually reach the cave. Take a refreshing swim in one of the rock pools. Return to Sun Creek Lodge. If you feel like, you can take a short drive to Punta Gorda, the district capital of Toledo. Overnight at Sun Creek Lodge. (B)

DAY 5 - PUNTA GORDA - HUMMINGBIRD HIGHWAY - BLUE HOLE - SAN IGNACIO

Return on the Southern Highway to Dangriga. From there you will take the idyllic Hummingbird Highway towards Belmopan. Visit the Blue Hole National Park and enjoy a refreshing swim in the blue cenote (sinkhole). After a visit of Belize’s capital Belmopan, take the Western Highway to San Igancio. Overnight at Cahal Pech Village, San Ignacio. (B)

DAY 6 - SAN IGNACIO - TIKAL - SAN IGNACIO

Short drive to the border to Guatemala. Drive to the biggest ever built city of the Mayas: Tikal, where once over 50,000 people lived. Walk the numerous jungle walks to discover silent witnesses in form of palaces and pyramids of this vanished high civilization. Climb the Pyramid number 4 to enjoy a breathtaking view over the endless green canopy of the rainforest. In the afternoon travel back to Belize. Overnight at Cahal Pech Village. (B)

DAY 7 - SAN IGNACIO - BELIZE CITY

A worthwhile visit in the morning is the butterfly breeding center and the small national history museum at the Lodge at Chaa Creek. You can also hike the Mayan medicinal plants trail. In the afternoon return to Belize City. Car rental return.

Transfer to Christchurch International Airport for your flight home.
