OVERVIEW

The main reason for visiting Rwanda is to track the famous mountain gorillas, but though this is an undeniably wonderful experience, there is a great deal more to the country and it is well worth spending a few extra days to experience it all. A couple of days of gorilla tracking is ideal and can easily be combined with some time in Kigali, relaxing along the shores of Lake Kivu or chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest.

This itinerary incorporates a few different regions of Rwanda and enables you to get a real feel for the stunning countryside as you drive through and fly over with helicopter. With a few days trekking for chimpanzees in the south of the country to trekking the volcanoes to visit the gorillas in the north. You will relax on the shores of Lake Kivu and enjoy the vibrant city of Kigali.

DAY 1 - ARRIVE RWANDA

Meet and greet at the Kigali International Airport by your safari driver-guide. You will be briefed on your tour and transferred for Lunch at Select Boutique, you will then be driven to Gisozi Genocide Memorial Center.

The Kigali Memorial exists is a permanent memorial to those who fell victim to the genocide in 1994. It deals with a topic of international importance, with far-reaching significance, and is designed to engage and challenge an international visitor base. Here you will be able to visit the three permanent exhibitions, the largest of which documents the genocide and pay tribute to the victims of the genocide.

You will then be transferred to Kigali Marriott Hotel/Kigali Serena Hotel to freshen up. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 2 - NYUNGWE FOREST NATIONAL PARK 

Breakfast at the hotel, check out and transferred to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Arrival and check in at Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel, enjoy  lunch. Afternoon visit to the Gisakura tea factory to experience how the Rwandan tea is planted, harvested and processed. Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay

DAY 3 - NYUNGWE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

Rise very early, breakfast at the lodge and transferred to the park offices for briefing before your guided trek.
Unlike other countries like Uganda where chimpanzee tracking activity starts at 8:00am, here in Nyungwe Forest National Park the activity starts at 6:00am. You will enter into the forest when its dark but you will be able to see primate species such as Colobus monkeys, forest birds and later, you will be able to see the chimpanzees when its already day time. Return to your hotel, freshen up and have lunch.
After lunch your driver guide will drive you to Uwinka RDB offices for the canopy walk briefing at 2.30 pm. Your guided canopy walk starts at 3:00 pm.

The Nyungwe Canopy Walk way Tour gives you the opportunity to experience the rainforest from a new perspective. The Canopy walkway consists of three bridges and three towers. The total length of the walkway is 200m.The walkway is embedded in a guided tour a long IgishigishigiTrail. Taking this tour, a specialized Park Guide will not only show you the forest canopy but also explain why it is an integral part of the tropical rainforest ecosystem. You will learn what the major characteristics of a rainforest and its canopy are and the importance Nyungwe Forest has for Rwanda

Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay

DAY 4 - LAKE KIVU

Depart your lodge and transfer to Lake Kivu. Arrival and check in at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel followed by a late lunch.

Serenely sited on the white sandy shores of Lake Kivu, the sixth largest lake in Africa, and surrounded by extensive tropical gardens, the tastefully open-plan Lake Kivu Serena Hotel offers the ideal extended holiday destination in Rwanda or week-end escape. It overlooks its own private beach and offers; accommodation, a panoramic restaurant, indoor and beachside bars, a luxury swimming pool, and the ‘Maisha' Health Centre.

Afternoon is at relaxation. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 5 - HELICOPTER TRIP TO MUSANZE

Breakfast at the hotel, check out at 10:30 am, transfer to Helipad for your scenic aerial view of the beautiful Rwanda. Arrival at Musanze Airstrip, you will be meet by a driver guide and transferred to your Lodge. Check in at the Lodge and have lunch. Afternoon is at relaxation. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 6 - GORILLA TREKKING 

Early breakfast at the lodge. You will then be transferred to the park headquarters in time for the Gorilla Trekking briefing at 7:00 am.
The guided walk begins at 8:00 am.
Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range and is the home of the rare mountain gorilla and the rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath, but the high point will be spending an hour with the remarkably peaceful gorillas despite their size and appearance as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting and raising their young.

After this memorable experience, you will return to the lodge for lunch. The afternoon will be at leisure to enjoy the surroundings (spectacular views of the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo and the Volcanoes) and lodge facilities. Opportunity to discover a special way to travel by canoeing on a gentle river close to the Gorillas - soak up impressive views, watch abundant birds and look out for the otters, meet friendly communities and find just a little excitement in the modern canoes.

DAY 7 - GOLDEN MONKEY TREKKING

Today, you have an early breakfast and transfer to the park headquarters for Golden monkey trekking briefing. The Tracking usually takes from 2 to 4 hrs. Once you come to the habituated families, you will spend the allowed one hour with them as they go about their daily life.
Trekking to see the golden monkeys is another highlight of Volcanoes National Park. The Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus Mitis Kandti) is a local subspecies of the widespread Sykes Monkey, also known as the “Blue Monkey” and is endemic to the high altitude forests. The monkeys are playful and inquisitive and often spend their time leaping from bamboo branches or frolicking on the forest floor. There are two habituated groups of Golden Monkey, one group comprises around 80 - 100 members and has its home at the foot of Mt Sabyinyo.

After this memorable experience, you will have your lunch at your Lodge. Afternoon, is at relaxation.Dinner and overnight stay at the Lodge.

DAY 8 - DEPARTURE FROM KIGALI

Having finished your breakfast, you will relax at the lodge. Later after your lunch, check out for a scenic road drive back to Kigali. Option to visit some craft centers for souvenirs before transfer to the airport for your departure.
