OVERVIEW

Lake Titicaca is a lake in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia. By volume of water, it is also the largest lake in South America.

It is often called the highest navigable lake in the world, although this refers to navigation by large boats, generally considered to mean commercial craft.

Lake Titicaca holds large populations of water birds and was designated as a Ramsar Site on August 26, 1998. Several threatened species such as the huge Titicaca Water Frog and the flightless Titicaca Grebe are largely or entirely restricted to the lake, and the Titicaca Orestias has gone extinct due to competition and predation by various introduced species of trouts and silversides.

Lake Titicaca has an Alpine climate with cool to cold temperatures for most of the year. The average annual precipitation is 610 mm. Winters are dry with very cold nights and mornings and warm afternoons. Below are the average temperatures of the town Juliaca in the northern part of the lake.

DAY 1 - ARRIVAL IN JULIACA

Meeting and assistance at the airport and transport to your hotel.

DAY 2 - EXCURSION TO LAKE TITICACA

An unforgettable full day excursion by boat on Lake Titicaca. Visit to the floating islands of Uros. The Uros are an ancient people living on a series of artificial islands made from totora reed that grows in the lake itself. They are made by weaving the totora to form a natural mat, where the reeds grow the thickest. They build their homes on top and cook in the open air to prevent fires. After an hour you will continue to the island of Taquile. In contrast to the other islands in the lake, where the people speak Aimara, here they speak Quechua. It was part of the Inca Empire and vestiges of that culture can still be seen in their buildings. However the Spanish also came here, forbade them from wearing their traditional costumes and forced them to use peasant dress. When you arrive you will be given a short description of the island and a tour round it before lunch. Then a walk to the main landing place for the trip back to Puno.

DAY 3 - JULIACA DEPARTURE

Transport from the hotel to Juliaca airport. Assistance with check-in.
