OVERVIEW

Discover the spiritual capital of Laos on this Amazing Luang Prabang holiday. Begin the tour with some time at your lesiure to enjoy the hotel or take a liesurely stroll around the city before climbing the 328 steps of Mount Phousi for spectacualr views. You will also visit a local hilltribe market where intricate handicrafts and quality textiles are plentiful.

On the second day of this Luang Prabang tour you will take to the milky waters of the Mekong and discover the tranquil rythms of river life stopping at revered sites including the Pak Ou Caves and Wat Xieng Thong. A highlight is the option to attend a performance by the Laos Royal Ballet. End this day with a visit to the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Center (TAEC) a great introduction to the ethnic-cultures of the region.

Travellers have the option of rising early and partaking in the synonymous alms giving experience, a tradition often associated with Luang Prabang. On the third day you will get better acquainted with the city’s main sites and try and get a feel for the energy of the place, paying visits to revered temples. This afternoon you will head to the stunning Kung Si waterfalls where emerald waters meet with a spectacular jungle interior, a great place to take a swim and experience the natural beauty of Laos.

End your holiday with a trip on the elegant Nava Mekong boat, a traditional river boat, for a cruise down the mighty Mekong.

LUANG PRABANG - PAK OU CAVES - KUANG SI

DAY 1 - WELCOME TO LUANG PRABANG, LAOS

Arrival Luang Prabang, your guide and private car will meet you and transfer you to your hotel for check-in.

DAY 2 - LUANG PRABANG - PAK OU CAVES - LUANG PRABANG

After breakfast transfer to the pier for a cruise along the Mekong. Before cruising, start your morning a visit to the most photographed temple, Wat Xieng Thong. Located at the end of the peninsula, close to the Mekong, this temple was built in 1560 by King Setthathirat, the library was added in 1828.

Cruise up the Mekong River to the famous Pak Ou Caves. Locally called Tam Ting, the caves are filled with thousands of gold-lacquered Buddha statues. The statues range in size from a few centimeters tall to the height of a human and are crammed into the cave which is nestled in a limestone cliff. The caves are also a destination for local pilgrimages.

After visiting the caves cruise back to Luang Prabang. If time permits, stop on the way back at Ban Xang Hay, a village that specializes in making rice wine.

Once back in Luang Prabang you will enjoy a selection of local favourites at one of the best Lao restaurants in town, Tamarind.

The city tour begins in the afternoon with your guide who will teach you more about the enchanting World Heritage Town of Luang Prabang. The tour starts at the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum. Continue to Wat Mai, a temple renowned for its golden bas-relief. During Pimai, the Lao New Year, the Prabang normally housed in the Royal Palace Museum is put on public display in this temple. Next is Wat Sensoukarahm, built in 1718 with a dazzling golden façade.

Continue to the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre, a museum dedicated to exploring the rich diversity of Laos’ ethnic minorities. Traditional costumes, tools, and artifacts are on display alongside in-depth descriptions and written histories.

DAY 3 - LUANG PRABANG - KUANG SI WATERFALL - LUANG PRABANG

For early risers, there is a very special dawn visit to watch the monks collecting the alms. As the sun begins to rise, long lines of orange-robed monks leave their pagodas and walk barefoot down the streets collecting offerings from Luang Prabang residents.

This morning you will be driven through the Luang Prabang countryside to Kuang Si Waterfalls (32km southwest of the city). Along the way you will drive through beautiful landscapes of rice fields, hills, and small villages. There are also viewpoints overlooking the Mekong River. Stop en-route to visit a small village which is home to one of the area’s many ethnic minorities. You will have an opportunity to learn about their traditions and culture, much of which has remained unchanged for centuries.
Upon reaching Kuang Si Waterfall, relax and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings.

Before you leave you might like to visit the bear sanctuary which is next to the falls, run by Free The Bears Fund Inc. There are currently 23 Asiatic Black Bears living in the sanctuary, which has saved them from poaching.

Return to your hotel and enjoy time at leisure until 16:00.
Guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel. Climb the 328 steps that lead to the top of Mount Phousi where you will be rewarded with marvelous views of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers, the neighboring mountain ranges, and the city buildings. The sunset views are particularly spectacular as the sun casts glorious colors over the peaceful scenery below. Descend the steps on the opposite side of the hill and stroll to the nearby colorful Night Market.

DAY 6 - LUANG PRABANG DEPARTURE

After your breakfast, free time at leisure. Your guide and private car will meet you at the hotel and transfer you to the airport for your flight.

Option: Evening performance at the Royal Ballet Theatre. Founded in 2002 in cooperation with the Institute of Cultural Research, the Ballet aims to preserve this important aspect of Lao cultural heritage. Watching the spectacular performances of the Royal Ballet, including scenes from the Lao-Ramayana, Lao folk dances and tribal dances will provide a unique experience that you will never forget. Show starts at 6:00pm (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday). Please note that the Royal Ballet Theater is normally closed from June to September.
